Jim McNeely
(30 October, 2008)
On Thursday 30 October, Goulburn was fortunate to have one of the foremost jazz pianists and arrangers in the world perform at St Saviour’s Hall. The Goulburn Regional Conservatorium is proud to have been able to present the amazing talents of Jim McNeely, all the way from New York. Not only did Jim give an amazing concert, but he also facilitated workshops for many local and visiting musicians, which helps to ensure that Australian musicians have the opportunity to learn from the best in the world – and all of this right here in Goulburn. Jim performed with and conducted the “Spare Parts Big Band”, a group normally led by saxophonist Gai Bryant and made up of the cream of Australia’s jazz and rock musicians. This group handled the incredibly complicated arrangements of Jim McNeely with considerable aplomb. The crowd in attendance was enthused both by the high level of musicianship displayed and by the interesting original tunes penned by Jim McNeely.
