Noel Jeremy and Stephen O'Connell

(6 November, 2008)

On 6 November, the Goulburn Regional Conservatorium presented the first of its new “Thursday Morning Concert Series” featuring well-known local musicians Noel Jeremy (Piano) & Stephen O'Connell (Clarinet & Saxophone). It was a fantastic concert that featured new compositions by Noel & Stephen, plus a work by the highly regarded Australian composer, Don Banks.

The show commenced with two tunes – “Bicycle Heaven” and “Thema Pure” – which were written for clarinet by Noel. To the delight of the crowd, he gave an entertaining and informative introduction to each piece. Later in the program, they played four pieces written for soprano saxophone by Stephen. They were “The Ledge”, “Blues for Dot”, “Playful Things” and “Those Birds Again”. Stephen wrote each of these tunes in June 2008 whilst on an Artists Trip to the Outback. He regaled the crowd with stories of his experiences on the trip and the reasons for which he wrote each of the four pieces.

The “Thursday Morning Concert Series” will occur on the first Thursday of each month in Room 1 at the Conservatorium– excluding school holidays – and will feature tutors and students of the Conservatorium plus the occasional special guest artist, with entry being only $5. The next concert will be held on Thursday 4 December commencing at 11.00am.
