Scholarship Holders' Concert
(26 November, 2009)
Ben Corby – Guitar; “Curse of the Castle Dragon” (Gilbert)
Ben played a great version of this challenging and entertaining heavy metal tune on his electric guitar. He exhibited great technique, good sense of stylistic interpretation and acknowledged the audience like a true professional
Alizee Wachtenheim – Voice; “Ducks are Delightful” (Holland) & Do Re Mi (Sound of Music)
Alizee enchanted the crowd with her excellent introduction to her two songs. She went on to give a very energetic and professional performance during which she sang with great presence and exhibited a clear and accurate tone. Alizee has an immense amount of potential and is already well on the way to being a great singer.
Josh McVey – Guitar; “Eruption”
Josh played this Eddie Van Halen classic with no accompaniment whatsoever, and in the process demonstrating to the audience that he has plenty of self-confidence. He was very professional, had great stage presence and had a fantastic guitar sound.
Eden Greaves – Piano; “Sonatina Op. 36, Movement 1: Allegro” (Clementi) & “Spiel” from Gyermekeknek Sz 42 (Bartok)
Eden is a true professional in the making. The person who was programmed to perform before her tonight was ill, meaning that without any notice, Eden found herself up on stage earlier that she was meant to be! This didn’t faze her at all – in fact, Eden demonstrated an amazing amount of progress in 2009. The amount of dynamic range on the piano exhibited by her was truly astonishing for someone so young. Her timing was excellent, and she also showed great “touch” and sense of musicianship.
Anabel Mifsud – Keyboard; “Promise” (Morgan)
Anabel played the electronic keyboard in this performance and deftly showed off her many skills as she used the full range of keyboard sounds, including both the rhythm box and bass patterns to accompany her beautifully played melody.
Helen Devery –Flute; “Sonata in G Minor”, Movement 1, Allegro (JS Bach)
The self proclaimed “star of the Regional Band” lived up to her billing with a terrific performance of this demanding work. She projected a clear, rich tone that was reminiscent of the excellent Jane Rutter concert at the GRC earlier in the year.
Catherine Woolley – Piano; “4 Variations on a Theme by Paganini” (Labunski)
This work was originally written for violin, but that didn’t stop Catherine! She attacked the work with great commitment and displayed excellent technique and understanding of the stylistic complexity of the piece. An excellent performance
Katrina Rivera – Piano; “Prelude” (Rachmaninoff)
Katrina played a mature and dynamic version of this timeless classic. It is a very complex and difficult work that she played as Rachmaninoff would surely have envisaged it! The crowd loved it – the highlight of the concert.
