Way Out West

What a great band Way Out
West are. They appeared at the Goulburn Regional
Conservatorium as part of their east coast tour for 2009 and
mightily impressed the
enthusiastic crowd with their virtuosic playing coupled with
serious grooves and
excellent tunes. They have developed a unique sound, which
blends Vietnamese and
African influences with Jazz in a surprising and vibrant manner.
The band features
Peter Knight (Trumpet), Dung Nguyen (dan tranh, dan bau and
modified electric
guitar), Ray Pereira (Percussion), Adam Simmons (Saxophones),
Howard Cairns
(Bass) and Dave Beck (Drums & Percussion). The ethereal sounds
of Nguyen’s
traditional Vietnamese instruments are particularly interesting
in a jazz setting and
ensure that the band stands out from the crowd. Highly
recommended.
